Volunteers

Our volunteers drive our programs!

Volunteering with the Adaptive Sports Program New Mexico is a great way to have an impact on the lives of people with disabilities in New Mexico. Our many volunteers will tell you that there is nothing quite like sharing the joy of outdoor recreation with others!

Our volunteers generously donate their time and expertise to ASPNM, helping the program provide thousands of adaptive lessons each year.  Ongoing training is provided.  If you have skills in any of the sports we offer, or would like to help “behind the scenes” with special events or projects, we want you to be part of our team! The steps to become a volunteer are listed below.  Please contact Us if you have additional questions at 505.570.5710.

WINTER PROGRAM

The ASPNM Ski/Snowboard program is staffed by a yearly average of 250 volunteer instructors, many certified by Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA). Instructors must be over the age of 18 and be intermediate to advanced skiers or snowboarders. New volunteer instructors receive four days of intensive, hands on training with yearly updates. Training includes disability specific issues such as medications, behaviors, equipment fit, teaching styles, etc.

Each volunteer is asked to contribute six teaching days each winter. Opportunities to teach additional days are available. The program also offers some non-skiing positions as well. Instructor incentives as well as other important program information are discussed at the yearly Volunteer Orientation held in November, both in Santa Fe and Albuquerque.

SPRING / SUMMER / FALL PROGRAMS

During the summer months, we offer many multi-week, single-day, and overnight Adaptive Sports events. The best way to find out about these events is to read our emails, or check this page to register for the events where you can help. Please remember that registration is required for each event!

Training is provided for volunteers who instruct for our summer sports. These trainings happen early in the Spring or Summer, and some larger events have training included the first day. Please view our volunteer registration page to see our current volunteer needs.

Andrew Casados

We are heartbroken to share the news that our dear friend, Andrew Casados,  passed away after a long battle with liver disease. Andrew volunteered with the ASPNM ski program for 22 years. Throughout those years, Andrew could always be counted on to be one of the first to arrive on the mountain, excited to share his love of skiing with ASPNM athletes and his fellow volunteers. Andrew always had a warm smile for everyone, and often shared how blessed he felt to be on the mountain amongst friends. We hope everyone will take a moment on the slopes to think of Andrew and appreciate his many contributions to ASPNM. He will be dearly missed by the ASPNM family, and we are wishing his family peace and comfort during this difficult time. A celebration of Andrew's life will be held at a later date. To view Andrew's obituary and/or leave condolences for the family, please click here.
